The incomparable, intoxicating and inimitable country of India is known the world
over for its rich cultural heritage. The land of the saintly sages and the royal
rulers boasts of colorful customs and timeless traditions. The people carry on with
the legacy of their own lands and the beautiful built buildings act as the evidence
of the elegant architecture we have inherited. Amongst the many treasures of the
yester years we have the abode of the nobles, the forts and palaces.
Heritage Tour of Rajasthan
Rajasthan the Land of Kings is steeped in romantic history, chivalry and valor.
Formerly known as Rajputana, it boasts of some of the finest fortress palaces,
built with sandstone quarried from the Land itself. With its turbaned men and richly
jeweled women, its crystal lake and island Palaces, its quaint havelies and villages,
fairs and festivals, Rajasthan constantly beckons.
In order to catch a glimpse of the bygone era follow the royal trail. The ravishing
state of Rajasthan is home to much more than the heritage hotels. The forts and
palaces are abundant in this colorful land. A journey through the desert land will
leave you mesmerized with the astonishing heritage revealed in its forts and palaces.
The desert state of Rajasthan is a land steeped in history, romance and irony: a
tiny drop of rain transforms a tree from listless to lush; the architectural colours
contrast with nature to mesmerizing effect. The Rajputs were prolific builders and
the Aravali terrain bares testimony to some of the most magnificent forts and palaces
in the world, holding a history of fortune and tragedy within its harsh Thar Desert.
It is a fascinating history; colourful and romantic, and the unraveling of its legacy
is one of the quests of the exploring luxe-trotter's cultural grails. Today, when
visiting this land of honey, the hotel-palace is one of the highlights and cultural
fascinations of your visit. Jaipur, nicknamed the Pink City because of its rose
tinted hues, from the walls of its enormous palaces, to the houses nestled pell-mell
up the hills, is inspiriting.

- Rambagh Palace, Jaipur
It has a surfeit of glorious palaces and one that stands out as the most spectacular
is the Taj's Rambagh Palace. For nearly two centuries, the Rambagh Palace has been
home to generations of Royals. In 1925 the palace was converted into the residence
of the Maharaja of Jaipur, which subsequently became known as the 'Jewel of Jaipur'
when it became a luxury hotel in 1957. In 1972 Taj Hotel Resorts and Palaces took
over the reins and it now shines as the brightest jewel in Jaipur's sparkling crown.
The Palace has 85 rooms, including suites which were chambers of the former Maharaja,
now restored to their colorful past with rich silk drapes, period art and chunky
wooden furniture. The facilities here are lavish and offer regal-style service from
banqueting to all-night partying. It is here that you will hear the echoes of the
Rajputana era, see the beauty of the lush exquisitely maintained gardens and stay
as guests in authentic Taj inspired style. High tea on one of the many terraces,
overlooking the manicured gardens and palace surrounds, is a memory each guest can
cherish for a lifetime.
From the beautifully manicured lawns and gurgling fountains that usher you through
the palace gates, right through to the outsized chandelier that leads your eye up
and up to the impossibly high entrance ceiling inside, the silk-covered sofas, subtle
seating alcoves and unhurried ambience confirm that this is a true, Victorian-era
royal residence, not a computer-generated fantasy of classic hotel design.
Located at the far end of the hotel, close by the green and white striped 'Polo
Bar' that bears ample silverware evidence of the family's passion for the game.
The king-sized sitting room with bar area and large dining table leads to full-sized
French doors and a generous veranda; offering an undisturbed view of Wimbledon-green
lawn, lily pond and swans, as well as an intoxicating scent of jasmine.
The luxuriously-appointed sleeping chamber - bedroom being far too prosaic a word
for this gem - boasts an inviting pair of his and hers double beds with large matching
ottomans and capacious bedside cabinets. By day, the beds are festooned with harem-style,
embroidered cushions, but by night, unseen hands have primped and plumped to reveal
the softest mattresses and pillows beneath.
The 'khansamas' or royal cooks keep their best recipes a secret, they serve a delightful
Punjabi lunchtime speciality - sweet water fish, cooked in a tandoor - It's a delicious
wake-up dish of lamb with chillies, served with lentils and corn bread, but its
intensely pungent and exotic spices have the surprising effect of cooling down,
rather than firing, already overheated Western systems.
- The Lake Palace, Udaipur
More than 250 years ago, an Indian playboy prince of the royal Mewar dynasty - whose
blue blood lineage was traceable back to the Sun God - scandalised his parents by
taking moonlight picnics with young women within earshot of members of the court.
He responded by commissioning construction, in 1746, of his own unique hideaway,
whose true purpose was kept a secret. Dubbed the 'Pleasure Palace' by his architects,
it was placed on an island in the middle of a lake - far away from prying eyes -
and little known to his parents, the partying continued.
That royal prince was Maharana Jagat Singhji II of Udaipur in North West India,
whose family also boasted a Monsoon Palace high up on the nearby Aravalli Mountains,
a magnificent City Palace for use in winter, as well as an official Summer Palace
residence for use when the Mewar clan needed a private retreat.
In the decades that followed its inauguration, the Pleasure Palace on Lake Pichola
eventually became the top recreational centre for other members of the Maharana's
family; many of whom ordered numerous additions and embellishments to the original
build.
By the early 20th century, the place had fallen out of favour with the royals though
and following a period of disuse, it was eventually converted into a grand museum
of Udaipur life. It wasn't until the early 1960's that an entrepreneurial Indian
prince of the time saw its potential as a backdrop to fine dining and entertaining
and by 1963 it had become a fully-fledged commercial hotel.
Today, the Taj Lake Palace is a jewel in the crown of the Taj Hotels, Resorts and
Palaces portfolio. Approachable only by boat - an antique royal barge leads the
flotilla, but there are also numerous speedboats and gondolas - this exquisite white
marble palace appears to float gently on the waters of Lake Pichola even if in reality
it is solid as a rock.
Outside, the painstaking renovation of original courtyards, pavilions, ponds, gardens
and fountains create an intriguing maze of open and more sheltered spaces for outdoor
contemplation, while inside, each room and suite has its own unique ambience and
design.
Endorsing the International Standards with its thoughtful provisions S.K.Soni Hospital
boasts of lush patient friendly interiors comprising a capsule lift, fountain and
a hanging staircase complemented by utility general services in an air conditioned
environment. Rajashans first ISO 9001 certified multispeciality corporate hospital
equipped with all life saving equipments. Spacious general wards along with semi
deluxe, deluxe and super deluxe suites.
- Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur
At 30 acres in total, everything at the Udaivilas resort is on a grand scale. From
the Oberoi Spa by Banyan Tree - which occupies two entire floors and offers more
than 30 different holistic treatments such as ayurveda and aromatherapy - to the
Candle Room; a miniature glass palace or 'Sheesh Mahal' constructed of 175,000 separate
mirror pieces, Udailvilas and its hospitality are simply breathtaking.
From the numerous gold-leafed, silvered chandeliers, murals and frescoes inside
the building to the half-hidden courtyards, walkways, sculptures and gently rippling
fountains that lead guests to the exquisitely-maintained gardens, the hotel is a
palace in grand classic style built to exacting 21st century standards.
Designed in white marble, but with vast, hand-made rugs to soothe, the large sitting
room hung with exquisite Indian art and murals has both dining table and chaise
longue; the latter enticingly festooned with gold, silk cushions.
Next door, the enormous bed, framed in darkest mahogany and flanked by a pair of
giant lamps, is raised just far enough off the floor to give it the flavour of a
full-blown four-poster and its softness promises the most relaxing of nights.
