Rajasthan State Elections 2008 | Vote Box

The state assembly election phobia is quite visible on the streets in Jaipur, my home town. Political parties have started big time campaigning and promoting themselves and their election agenda by various means.

The list of final candidates contesting this elections have been finalized. We have already written blogs on the list of candidates sometime back.

In the beginning, Congress party announced certain norms for selecting party candidates, however they didn’t adhere to same and candidates beyond 70 yrs of age have been given a ticket under pressure from the veterans.

Congress also ignored Youth and Women leaders against their promises. The party gave a change to candidates as per the successor policy which from my point of view makes them vulnerable to win this time also.

While BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party) though changed about 35% of the candidates, still the loyalists had their stay in the contesting candidates list. Both the parties are facing serious incumbency from their own party candidates who are now fighting as rebels.

BJP though have cadre but its base seems to be eroded as the image of the party doesn’t looks respectable having major impact by Land Mafias, Power Brokers and Liquor Mafias.

There is a general feeling that BJP could have done much better for the general public than what they have done in last 5 yrs. I see no enthusiasm in general public as they feel both the parties are flooded with irregularities and the ruler masses who mattered most, haven’t received any relief since last 60 years or so.

The only effective leader Mr Ashok Gehlot from Congress is still being disliked by one important community of state who are about 12% in population and matter more than 60-65 constituencies in Rajasthan. BJP on the other hand, have support of RSS and other Hindutva parties, and is expected that this support might give them boost in the elections this time around. Still once sided voting by minorities and Reserved castes who normally vote against them, will do maximum damage in their vote sharing.

BJP ageneda of rapid development and good governance is making hardly any impressions on the mind of general public. One of the major agenda which is making a impact is corruption. The cast is also another big agenda. Here in Rajasthan, People says “Vote is not casted, but Cast is Voted”.

I as a common citizen of Rajasthan always feel that why these parties do not select candidates with clean nationalistic image and have visionary mindset. General opinion is Congress may win but as BJP has its own strengths, so no one can really predict who might sweep these elections.
