Mount Abu Sanctuary, Mount Abu
The quaint little hill station Mount Abu is set amidst verdant hills and and picturesque
landscape. It is located at the southern western end of the princely state of Rajasthan.
At a distance of about 185 km from Udaipur, the hill station is famous for several
temples, Nakki Lake and Wildlife Sanctuaries.
The sanctuary located in Mount Abu was declared as a protected area in the year
1960 and ever since then this sanctuary which is spread over the gorgeous Aravalli
range of mountains has been attracting not only domestic tourists but also tourists
from overseas. Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill station and in the days of yore
it used to be the summer retreat of Rajasthan's royalty.
After the temples and the lake get a slice of the flora, fauna and the wildlife
at the Mount Abu Wildlife sanctuary, covers 328 sq. km area of the oldest mountain
ranges-the Aravali.
Unlike other sanctuaries, what you would get to see is a linear hub for the wildlife,
with only the peak spreading onto a 19 km picturesque plateau. Due to topographical
constraints the sanctuary is only five to eight km wide.
The plant species that you get to see here would make your trip very different from
the other sanctuaries. Rich in floral biodiversity these forests nurture approximately
112 plant families. Mount Abu is the only place in Rajasthan where you get to see
a variety of orchids. The place is also rich in bryophytes and algae.
Three species of wild roses and about 16 species of ferns, some of which are quite
rare have also been reported from here. The South-West part of the Sanctuary is
rich in bamboo forests.
A keen observer with a bit of knowledge would find an amazing number of herbal medicinal
plants. About 81 species of tree, 89 species of shrubs, 28 species of climbers and
17 species of tuberous plants have been identifies with medicinal importance.
You will also get to see the sambhar, jungle cat, small Indian civet, wolf, hyena,
jackal, Indian fox, sloth bear and may be the elusive leopard besides several other
species of animals.
