Beautiful Gardens Around Ana Sagar Lake

Ana Sagar is the tank (manmade lake) in Ajmer. It is on the banks of this lake that Khwaja Sahib is said to have stayed after arrival in Ajmer in 1192 AD. The lake as history records was built by Raja Anaji the grandfather of Emperor Prithviraj Chauhan by damming the river Luni. The palace of the Khaajas’s stay is known as the Chilla Khawaja Sahib’, whch is located on the top of the Anasagar Ghati.

Daulat Bagh

Later the Mughal Emperors made additional constructions to beautify the lake. In 1637 A.D Shah Jahan built five beautiful pavilions called Baradaris overlooking the lake with impeccable white polished marble on the embankment of Ana Sagar and the Daulat Bagh Gardens were laid by Jahangir.

Durga Bagh

Another charming garden on the banks of the majestic Ana Sagar Lake is Durga Bagh. The park built in 1868 AD by Maharaja Shiv Dan is a lush garden with numerous flowers and is one of the best known gardens in Ajmer.

Durga Bag is a garden on the near side of Ana Sagar and is a nice place to relax. There are marble monuments by the shore and plenty of ice cream and papad-wallahs selling snacks.

Annual Urs Festival Commences at Dargah Shariff, Ajmer, Rajasthan

Dargah Sharif’ or ‘Holy Dargah’ is one of the most sacred Muslim shrines in india.

Venerated by both Hindus and Muslims, it is the tomb of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti, a Sufi saint who came from Persia and devoted his life to the service and upliftment of the poor and downtrodden.

Annual 797th Urs commences with Flag Hoisting at Buland Darwaza

The 797th Urs of the 12th century Sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, commenced on Friday with the flag-hosting ceremony at the Buland Darwaza.

About 200 people from the Gori family of Bhilwara, headed by Fakrudin Gori, came to Ajmer. As per age-old traditions, the family is authorized to hoist the Urs flag.

As the festival  began, the devotees, who have come from various parts of the country, wished each other Urs Mubarak’ and celebrated the occasion. They shopped at the dargah bazaar, which has been decorated extensively for the festival.

Different Activities During Urs

On the appearance of the moon for the month of Rajab, there comes a change in daily routine which is generally held at the Holy Shrine.

The main entrance of the Holy Tomb which in ordinary days is closed at night, is kept open through out the day and night (barring for 2 or 3 hours at night) during the six days of Urs.

All other daily and weekly programmes are suspended and few functions and ceremonies commence from that night.

Qul Day – Final Day of Urs

Qul ceremony takes place on the last day of Urs which is also the sixth day of the month of Rajab. This is considered to be a very important day. After the morning prayer, people start gathering the Holy Tomb.

The activities include recital of Quran, Darood, Shijra-e-Chishtia and other verses. People also tie small turbans on each other’s head and pray for the benefit of the people, for peace, prosperity and happiness.

Kiran Maheshwari for Ajmer Parliamentary Constituency, Rajasthan Elections

Kiran Maheshwari is the BJP Candidate for Ajmer Parliamentary Constituency of Rajasthan State in General Elections India 2009. She will Contest against Congress candidate Sachin Pilot.

Political Career

Maheshwari had won from Udaipur Lok Sabha seat in 2004 against Congress leader Girija Vyas, but after delimitation Udaipur became a Scheduled Tribe seat. She resigned as MP late last year and successfully contested the Assembly elections from Rajsamand. Barely four months after her election as an MLA, she is now again aspiring to be an MP from Ajmer.

After getting Nominated as a Candidate, she claimed that after winning the elections, she would solve every problem of the district and her preferences are to extend the broad gauge in Ajmer and provide 24 hours drinking water supply.

When asked if her being an MLA and now vying for the Ajmer seat could send a wrong message to voters in her assembly seat, she replied, “I am not the only MP who is contesting elections while being an MLA. There are many political leaders who while being MLAs are in fray for Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.”

Why She is Nominated from Ajmer?

Kiran’s candidature reflects that party had difficulty in finding a suitable candidate against Sachin Pilot, who is contesting from Ajmer after a major chunk of Gujjar vote bank was attached to the constituency after delimitation.

But BJP analysts have other things in mind that Kiran would help Rasa Singh Rawat who is contesting from Rajsamand and in return Rawat would provide his Rawat community vote bank.

Rasa Singh Rawat has won the Ajmer seat five times in past elections because of Rawat vote bank.

Adhi – Din – Ka Jhonpra, Ajmer Rajasthan

Adhi Din Ka Jonpra , Ajmer, Rajasthan

Adhi Din Ka Jonpra , Ajmer, Rajasthan

Location and Architecture

At the foot of the Taragarh hill stands the relic of the past and interesting historical magnificent building Jamia (Jamia in Arabic Connotes a University). Al – Tamish popularly known as  Adhai- din – ka Jhonpra.

This is a masterpiece of Indo Islamic architecture located very close to the dargah. It was orginally a Sanskrit college, built within a temple. As Legend goes.

This structure has this unique name because it took only two and a half days (Adhai Din) to complete its construction.

In 1193 A.D. when  Mohhamed Ghauri conquered Ajmer he turned the building into a mosque by adding a wall with seven arches, in front of the pillared hall in just two-and-a-half days (adhai-din) and hence the name.

Whats Unique About Adhai – din – ka – Jhonpra

The mosque has extensive and massive stony structure replete with extermly fine and intricate workmanship on stone. Some believe that only the smaller marble arch in the mosque may have been constructed in 2-1/2 days but the whole massive structure, with its elaborate Arabic tracings and delicate engraving detail, is definitely seems to be a work of many years sustained labor.

Three pillars have been placed on one top of the other to give the impression of height of which no two pillars are alike. The pillared hall is 61 mtrs long and its 124 columns support the 10 shallow domes. An arcade of seven arches can be seen, which is finely engraved with Kufi and Jughra inscriptions from the holy Koran. The district pillars and arched screen with its ruined minarets make it a splendid architectural masterpiece.

Nevertheless you could yourself marvel at the stunning piece of architure , read the inscribed Koranic verses and amaze at how this poetry in stone could be accomplished in two and a half days.
