Bharatiya Havelis in Fatehpur, Rajasthan – Adorned with Mirror Work and Japanese Tiles

Founded in the mid 15th century by a Kayamkhani Nawab, Fatehpur’s havelis are unrivalled.

The frescoes on the Devera and Singhania Haveli of Fatehpur are matched by few others. Another haveli, Goenka has brilliant frescoes paintings, with some of them depicting Lord Krishna.

The Ram Gopal Mahavir Prasad Goenka Haveli, Hukmi Chand Choudhri Haveli and Bharatiya Havelis are well worth a visit.

More hybrid examples, the two Bhartia Havelis are also impressive in Fatehpur. These havelis were build presumably around 1920 by Bhartia family. These are adorned with mirror work on their entrances and Japanese tiles patterned with Mount Fuji paintings.

Shyonarayan Kyal Haveli in Laxmangarh, Rajasthan – Famous Tourist Place for Temples, Fortress and Beautiful Havelis

Laxmangarh town came into being in the year 1862. It was planned nearly 200 years ago by Rao Raja Laxman Singh of Sikar Thikana under shekawati region of erstwhile Rajputana.

Laxmangarh Fort – Imposing Building in Town

The most imposing building in this town, which lies only 20 km south of Fatehpur, is its small fortress, which looms over the well laid out township on its west side. The fort was built by Lakshman Singh, the Raja of Sikar, in the early 19th century.

The fort is private property – owned by some businessmen of local origin – and is closed to the public.

You can however climb up the ramp to a temple which is open to the public, and the view from the ramp can be quite fascinating too.  Of course, seeing the town from this height tempts you to go further higher, but a guard effectively keeps the public out.

A short distance to the east, is the Shyonarayan Kyal Haveli, which dates from around 1900 located in Laxmangarh.

Inside the Shyonarayan Kyal Haveli,  under the eaves on the east wall, you can see a painting depicting a man and woman engaged in an intimate tryst while a maidservant stands by with a glass of wine at the ready.

Other paintings at the Shyonarayan Kyal Haveli include those of a woman admiring herself in a mirror and Europeans being drawn by horses with a tiny coachman at the reins. This haveli also reflects the characteristic grand architecture with grand carved wood door, courtyards and pillared hallways.

Other Places To Visit in Laxmangarh

Other than the fort and Shyonarayan haveli, the Ghanta ghar (Clock Tower), hanuman temple, Murlimanohar Temple,  and various other havelis including Chetram Sanganeeria Haveli, Rathi Family Haveli, Char Chowk Haveli are also worth a visit on your shekhawati tour.

Biyani Havelis in Sikar, Rajasthan – Property of the Ruling Merchant Family

Founded in the 17th century, Sikar was the largest and the richest ‘thikana’ (Feudal State) under Jaipur. The town was modeled to resemble the city plan of Jaipur.

Sikar is now one of the two districts of Shekhawati, the other being Jhunjhunu. This walled city has lofty buildings, a massive fort and an array of splendid havelis and temples ornate with beautiful frescoes.   Worth a visit are Sikar’s large market, the clock tower and the painted Biyani havelis.

The Biyanis were the ruling merchant family, having their handsome Biyani Haveli (circa 1865) with some excellent murals.  There is one haveli among Biyani Havalis painted totally in blue color, suggestive of the typical Chinese blue-and-white porcelain.

Inside the haveli is a little temple decorated with mirror work, though it is scarred badly in places where antique dealers have torn out the glass covered pictures.

Other Places to visit in Sikar

There are some other attractions in Sikar including  Sagarmal Sodhani Haveli, Madho Niwas-Kothi. Jubilee Hall & Fort are worth visiting while you are travelling Sikar.  The fort and temples of Gopinath, Raghunath and Madan Mohan with commendable frescoes are absolutely exemplary.

Harkishan Das Saraogi Haveli in Fatehpur, Sikar – Beautiful Frescos and Well Maintained Haveli

The town of Fatehpur in Shekhawati region has its share of havelis, but few are as beautiful with fresco and well maintained as those in nearby towns like Mandawa.

Fatehpur History

The Muslim Kayamkhani Nawab, Fateh Khan established Fatehpur in 1451. He constructed the fort of Fatehpur in 1449 and ruled up to 1474. It served as the capital of him.

Shekhawat Rajputs took it over in the 18th century.

Jagannath Singhania Haveli in Fatehpur, Sikar – Famous for Fine Paintings and Exclusive Rooms

Fatehpur is a town in Sikar district in Rajasthan.  It is midway between Jaipur and Bikaner on National Highway 11. It is famous for grand havelis with frescos, which is specialty of the Shekhawati region.

A number of Bawdis are also centers of attraction here.

The Jagannath Singhania Haveli has some fine paintings of Radha and Krishna and shows some British men holding guns. This haveli has special door rooms situated on the terrace which is open from all sides There is air-circulation from all sides and thus it remains cool naturally.

Exclusive “Baithak” in Haveli

The “Baithak” of  this haveli is  exclusive because it has 5 doors.  Other Baithak’s in the region have 3 doors only. There is room in Haveli “Baradari”  in Persian and Moghul architecture,  with 12 doors designed to allow the free draught of air through it. Persons of repute used it as a venue for formal and informal settings in hot weather.  It is also known as the ‘mehfil’ room.

Other Room include Rangeen Kamra, which is also known as the colourful room. The speciality of this particular room is that it acts both as a secret chamber and is also renowned for its artistic beauty. The floors, walls as well as the ceilings are hand painted depicting stories based on the life of Lord Krishna.

The haveli has Naal on one side and Nohra on the other side which can be used as open space for parking, swimming pool and is large enough to construct the two together.

Government Museum, Sikar – House of Ancient Sculptures

Government Museum, Sikar was opened to public on 28 June, 2006. The museum was built mainly to house the sculptures collected from Harshnath temple of 10 Cent. A.D.

Harshnath Temple, which is 14 km. away from Sikar, is an ancient site famous for the ruins old Shiva Temple located on the Aravalli hills of Rajasthan. The architectural display of the old temple is breath taking .

Sikar – Famous Around the World for Mansion

Sikar is a part of the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, famous around the world for its mansions with frescoes or painted havelis.

Sikar was an important trading centre and  Its merchant demonstrated their affluence by building large and luxurious mansions that are typical of Shekhawati region.

The important havelis  that a tourist can visit include Biyani Haveli made in 1865, Somani Haveli, painted in red and blue colors and the Chhotalal Sodhani Haveli built in 1884, that has an impressive entrance painted with dancing girls and panels from the Mahabharata inside.

Sikar also has cenotaphs of its royals, the important one is the Chhatri of Devi Singh from 1795 with nearly eighty painted panels. The market place here has a Clock Tower.

Another Major Attraction of Sikar is Khatushyamji Temple which is located 65 Km. away from Sikar & 80 Km. from Jaipur.

Khatu Shyam Ji Temple – Sikar, Rajasthan

History – Why it is called Khatu Shyam Ji Temple ?

The legend of this immensely popular Krishna temple can be traced back to the medieval Mahabharat where Barbareek, the son of great Pandav brother Bhim and Nag Kanya (snake princess) displayed his great warrior skills that pleased Lord Shiva who endowed his blessings in the form of Teen Ban (three arrows)

In order to watch the famous war of Mahabharat, he sat towards the battle field and in between his tryst with Lord Krishna in disguise becasme a vital part of the history and thus the incarnation of KHATU SHAMJI.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is architecturally rich. Lime mortar, marble and tiles have been used in constructing the structure. The shutters of the sanctum are beautifully covered with silver sheet.

Outside is the prayer hall, named Jagmohan and its walls are elaborately painted, depicting mythological scenes. The entrance gate and exit gate are made of marble; their brackets are also of marble and feature ornamental floral designs.

There is an open space in front of the entrance gate of the temple. The Shyam Bagicha is a garden near the temple from where flowers are picked to be offered to the deity. The Samadhi of Aloo Singh, a great devotee, is located within the garden.

The Gopinath temple lies to the south-east of the main temple. The Gaurishankar temple also lies nearby. There is an interesting tale associated with the Gaurishankar temple.

There is a steady stream of devotees the year round, but lakh of them gather at the annual fair from Phalgun Sudi Dashmi to Dwadashi. Apart from being a place of pilgrimage, a large number of people come for the Jadula ceremony (the first time all hair is shaved off the head) of their children.
