Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2008 Results Announced – Congress Emerges Victorious | Vasundhra Raje Resigns

Congress Wins Rajasthan State Assembly Elections 2008

Congress Wins Rajasthan State Assembly Elections 2008

The emerging results to Assembly polls show a 3:2 split in favor of Congress, providing a much-needed boost to the UPA ahead of general elections due in April-May 2009. It will give Congress the breathing space it needs to tackle the fallout of the Mumbai attacks and an economic slowdown.

Counting of votes for 200 assembly seats began on Monday in Rajasthan, where the Congress is pitted against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The vote count has been decided the fate of 2,193 candidates.

As the early trends for the Assembly elections in five states came in, the BJP said it was disappointed with the outcome in Rajasthan.

Congress has won 96 seats in the 200-Assembly seat, follwed by BJP, which has won 78 seats. The trends suggested a clear defeat for the ruling BJP in Rajasthan while it is in a neck and neck fight with Congress in Chattisgarh. The saffron party is also trailing the Congress in Delhi. However, it appears all set to return to power with a thumping majority in Madhya Pradesh.

The results have been depressing in Rajasthan for BJP. Taking a dig at the BJP for making terror an election issue, Congress today said its resounding victory in Delhi is a message to the saffron party’s leadership.

It is a double bonanza for Congress leader Ashok Gehlot. The former Rajasthan Chief Minister, who spearheaded the party campaign in the assembly polls, has reasons to smile as Congress is creating an upset for the ruling BJP in the desert state.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Monday submitted her resignation to Governor S K Singh following the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in assembly elections.

In Delhi, where Sheila Dikshit appears to be staging a third comeback, a record in party circles, Gehlot has also made a contribution being the AICC General Secretary in-charge of Delhi.

After hours of deliberations over the weekend, the BJP finally announced its first list of candidates for the Assembly elections. The polls for the 200-seat state assembly are scheduled Dec 4.

However, despite the lengthy discussions, the BJP senior leaders could only finalize and announce the names of 95 candidates, 21 less than the Congress in their first list. The party has gone ahead with Dr Digamber Singh from Deeg. The party has also allotted the Bandikui ticket to Salindra Joshi, former Congress minister who had recently joint the BJP.
