The Elephant Festival is one of the most popular fairs of rajasthan.  It has its own charm and is celebrated every year on the occasion of Holi, the festival of colors. This year it will be organized on 28 February, one day before Holi.

Decorated Elephants  – Center of Attraction

Jaipur Elephant Festival is perhaps the only festival where Elephants are given prime importance. Here, as you would expect from the name of the Festival – Elephants are the center of attraction.

The famous Chaugan ground of Jaipur makes the perfect venue for the occasion. It commences with a parade of decorated Elephants marching towards the ground and beautifully decked with floral motifs, make ultimate picture for the tourists. Being the time for Holi, tourists play Holi mounting on these painted Elephants.

History about Elephant Festival

The Rajput kings, treated elephants  with special enthusiasm as they not only during War times but also during royal festivities use the best which is Nishan-ka-hathi (the flag carrier) to lead the procession.

After the procession, King selects one elephant who entertain with their fights and other games in front of the royal guests including famous personalities of the British era and Maharajas of Indian dynasties. Latter, the flag carrying elephant rides up to Amber Palace.  Now this tradition is carried on till today as Rajasthan Tourism revived the tradition by including the Elephant Festival in the cultural calendar.

Attraction of Elephant Festival 2010

According to organizing committee, for grand finale this year, five elephants would enter the stadium from different entrances with their mahouts carrying a mashaal (torch).

They would then congregate at the center to form a chaupar and play Holi which would be a prelude to the fireworks. Beside this, five private bands have been invited which would lend archetypal Holi music with drums etc.

The festival will be running from 4 pm till 7 pm and will also see the traditional elephant procession, folk dance Chang’, matka race for the tourists, tug-of-war between locals and foreigners and the folk dance of Brij.

Galtaji is a holy pilgrimage of Rajasthan, located 10 kms away from Jaipur. The vast complex of Galta Ji has several temples in it.

The Temple of Galtaji is famous for its natural water springs. Set amidst the beautiful landscape, Galtaji Temple offers a picturesque view of the city. Galtaji is considered holy place, as Saint Galav spent his life meditating here.

About Galta Kund in Galtaji

There are seven tanks in all, the most pious being the Galta Kund, which is thought never to become dry. A large number of devotees take a holy bath in these tanks especially on Makar Sankranti in mid-January. These tanks are fed by Gaumukh, which is a spring arising from a rock shaped like a cow’s head.

The temple takes pride on its numerous pavilions with rounded roofs, delicately carved pillars and painted walls. Large springs and reservoirs circumvent the temple.

Moti Doongri, Jaipur – A Hill in Jaipur City

Moti Dungri is a small hill, centrally located in the city of Jaipur. The term Moti Dungri means Hill of Pearls or Pearl Hill. The hill is occupied by a palace and a temple. The temple of Moti Doongri is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This ancient temple serves as a tourist attraction for the scenic view it offers. Moti Dungri Temple is significant from the religious point of view. People from far and near often come to this sacred temple to pay their homage to Lord Ganesha.

About Birla Mandir

Popularly Known as the Birla Mandir, Situated Just below Moti Doongri , the temple note for its excellent architecture and exquisite carvings on the white marble was constructed in the year 1988, by Birla Group of Industries, one of the business tycoons of India .The Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Narayan), the preserver and his consort Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. Due to this reason, Birla Temple is also known as Laxmi Narayan Temple.

The Laxmi Narayan Mandir is a modern architectural marvel, surrounded by lush green gardens. The fascinating exteriors of the temple are carved splendidly with beautiful sculptures based of mythological themes, while the interiors have a large marble panel portraying mythological events. The Birla Temple has a museum too, which showcases the ancestral valuables of the Birla family. Birla Mandir / Laxmi Narayan Temple is a masterpiece of art.

Within the temple are splendid statues of many Hindu deities, while, the outer walls are adorned with great historical personages and religious figures. The three huge domes of the temple represent three different approaches to the religion. The beautiful white marble temple mesmerizes the onlookers, when it glows at night.

The attractive stained windows glass windows of the temple depict scenes from Hindu Mythology. Amongst all the idols, the marble idol of Ganesha is a masterpiece which looks almost-transparent.  The temple also portrays great historical achievers, philosophers and religious saints such as Socrates, Zarathustra, Christ, Buddha, and Confucius.
