Rajasthan State Industrial Infrastructure Growth Drivers – SEZs, EPIP, IT Parks etc.

Rajasthan State Industrial and Investment Corporation (RIICO), a State Government agency, has developed more than 300 industrial areas across various parts of Rajasthan. These industrial areas are developed with water, power, roads, shops and telecommunication facilities.

Currently More than 26633 industries are in production within the industrial areas developed by RIICO in Rajasthan.

Special Purpose Parks

RIICO is presently developing Theme Parks with special set of infrastructure and facilities for establishing industries of the same discipline in various cities of Rajasthan. The location for these industry specific areas are carefully selected after assessing the availability of related resources such as raw material, labor etc.

Some of the Important Parks Developed by RIICO are :

  • Export Promotion Industrial Parks (EPIP), Jaipur, Jodhpur and Neemrana

Export Promotion Industrial Parks have been set up at Sitapura in Jaipur, Neemrana in Alwar and Boranada in Jodhpur. EPIP Jaipur is the largest park in northern India.

  • Special Economic Zones (Jaipur and Jodhpur)

RIICO has set up  Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the State for Gems & Jewellery and Handicrafts at Jaipur and Jodhpur respectively.   • Agro Food Parks (Kota, Jodhpur, Sriganganagar & Alwar)
  • Information Technology Parks  (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Udaipur)

  • Textile City (Bhilwara)
  • Leather Complex (Manpur Macheri, Jaipur)
  • Ceramics Complex (Khara, Bikaner)
  • Minor Mineral Complexes (Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Dhoinda in Rajsamand and Mitrapura in Dausa).

Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Rajasthan – Offers Infrastructure and Business Environment to Promote Exports

Special economic zone or more commonly known as SEZ, is a particular area which acts as foreign territory for tariff and trade operations. In these zones Govt. provides tax exemption i.e excise, customs, sales and provide subsidisidies on water and electricity bills to companies.

Objectives of Special Economic Zone

The prime objective of the Government is to develop specially delineated economic zones  to provide enabling infrastructure and a hassle free environment to promote exports from the State.  Special emphasis is  laid on development of product specific Special Economic Zones to harness inherent potential of the State in the fields of Gems & Jewellery, Handicrafts, Woolen Carpets etc.

Rajasthan’s location and proximity to the Delhi makes it an ideal location for export-oriented industrial development on a large scale. 40% of the proposed Delhi-Mumbai freight corridor will pass through Rajasthan throwing up enormous possibilities for development of industrial belts such as special economic zones along the corridor.

New Concessions for SEZ in Rajasthan

Recently Rajasthan Chief Minister Mr Ashok Gehlot  added new points in SEZ Act that says : The industrial units established in the SEZ would get exemption from electricity duty for ten years instead of the previous seven years, while the hotels and entertainment units on the SEZ premises would be exempted totally from payment of luxury tax and get 50 per cent concession on entertainment tax for seven years.

SEZs in Rajasthan

Five SEZs with an expected investment of Rs.165.15 billion have already received formal approval and start working progressively. These are:

* Mahindra World City (Jaipur) Ltd., Jaipur

Following the success of Mahindra World City, Chennai, the second Mahindra World City was established in Jaipur. Inaugurated in December 2006, Mahindra World City, Jaipur is spread over an area of 3,000 acres.

Some of the other SEZ’s in Rajasthan are:

* Somani Worsted Ltd., Khushkeda, Bhiwadi, Alwar
* Genpact Infrastructure (Jaipur) Pvt. Ltd., Jaipur

Rajasthan Government To Announce a New Industrial Policy Focusing on SME’s

The Rajasthan Government will shortly announce a new industrial policy to resolve various difficulties of industrialists, small and medium industrial units and entrepreneurs. The policy will lay emphasis on bringing security to investors in the years to come.

This new policy will help to various memorandums of understanding signed by the new government headed by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and promote industrial development of Rajasthan.

Industry minister Jitendra Singh is holding divisional-level meetings with local entrepreneurs in Udaipur on last saturdeay. The meeting will be followed by others on June 23, June 30, July 11, July 18, July 25 and August 3 at Bikaner, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Kota, Bharatpur and Jaipur respectively.

A Insight View on Rajasthan Economy

Rajasthan has been in the forefront of Economic Reforms. It was the first State in the country to adopt the International Competitive bidding route for setting up power projects and State Road Policy, facilitating the entry of private enterprise in the Roads sector.

The state’s economy largely depends on agriculture, industries, natural resources and tourism. Rajasthan has large deposits of zinc and copper and these are being exploited for the development of industries dependent on these metals.

Also deposits of gypsum, lignite and mica are found in various parts of the state. It has a large production of cotton and the textile industries have been coming up in several places in Rajasthan.

Other private sector industries of the state include cement, ball bearings, sugar, caustic soda and other chemicals.

Rajasthan is a state where 80% of the people depend on agriculture. The rural economy of Rajasthan largely depends on farming. The major crops grown in the state include bajra, juar, wheat and barley.
