Rajasthan has been a heaven of various folk art forms. A medieval history includes the existence of princely states, which provided patronage to these art forms and their artists. Vibrant, vigorous and graceful, the dances of Rajasthan evoke the desert in all its moods.

Gulabo is a famous Kalbeliya dancer of rajasthan who well known as ‘Gulabi Sapera’  across world.

Kalbeliya Dance Features

The Kalbeliyas, is a snake-charmer community from Rajasthan, which performs the Kalbeliya dance. They rely heavily on this dance performance for their living.

The Kalbeliya women dancers wear long, black coloured, drindled-skirts heavily worked with embroidery and light-coloured thread along with small pieces of mirrors. This costume draws the attention in a somewhat strange way.

Part of International Culture & Jazz Band

Gulabo lives in Jaipur, where many other Kalbeliyas have begun to live rooted lives, sending their children to schools and looking at opportunities modern India offers.

She is part of the international culture and music circuit, part of jazz bands and a performer in films. She is also a visiting teacher in Copenhagen, Denmark every year, to train children there in body-awareness and dance.

In this Dance sapera dancers wear long, black skirts embroidered with silver ribbons. As they spin in a circle, their body moves very acrobatically. It is impossible to believe that they are made of anything other than rubber.

Vigorous and Zestful Display of Rajasthani Art

Kalbeliya Dancers are attired in traditional black accompaniment of pungi, dufli and plaintive notes of the ‘been’ – the wooden instrument of the snake charmers.

Two or three women sing in a high-pitched, free flowing voice, while others join in the dance. The vigorous and zestful display of their perfect movements to the enchanting tune of musical instruments is a treat to the eyes.

The Kalbelia Dancers perform in the time of any big festival or any cultural dance program all across the world.
