Sunheri Kothi in Tonk

The Sunheri Kothi in Tonk is one of the beautiful Havelis in Rajasthan which is also called the Golden Mansion of Tonk. It is situated near Bada Kua on Najar Bagh road in Tonk City.

The beautiful exteriors belies with the exquisite opulence. It was constructed in 1824 by Nawab Ameer Khan, and later renovated by Nawab Ibrahim Ali Khan.

Looks Stunning with Lavish Interiors

From inside, this Sunheri Kothi is stunning with lavish interiors. The walls of the mansion are golden polished, which looks fascinating.

Inlay work in mirrors, colured glass, glided stucco, mosaic and lapiz lazuli, painted and polished floors reflected in the fabulous stained glass windows, leave the visitor quite bedazzled with all this superb craftsmanship.

Shishmahal – The Big Hall inside Haveli

The mansion has a big hall, which is known as ‘Shishmahal’. The walls of the hall are decorated with glass work, flower paintings, mother-of-pearl and the exquisite work of ‘Pachhikari’ & ‘Meenakari’.

Other Places to Visit in Tonk

While moving around the town, you will find many old buildings, which used to serve the British offices. If you are interested in Literature, Tonk offers a huge library that was built by the Nawab of Tonk.  The library has a great collection of Arabic and Persian manuscripts. you can also check out the Institute of Arabic and Persian Research.

Jama Masjid is another attraction in Tonk, which is one of the biggest mosques in India. The gigantic minarets of this mosque can be seen from a long distance.

An Art Gallery was started in 2002, in which many artistic presentations of different classes are displayed. The beautiful calligraphic designs enchant the comers. Namda calligraphy, art of charming photography, collection of postage stamps etc. capture the eye of the visitors.

Calligraphy on human hair, pulse, rice and sesame alongwith the lines written inside the transparent glass bottles has made the Institute a centre of attraction of tourists and visitors.

Display Hall

A separate hall with the name of “Display Hall” is also maintained for displaying some of the important and historical manuscripts enriched with some of the seal impressions of kings, princesses etc. and notes in their own hand writings with signatures etc., which are preserved under the intact show-cases covered with a transparent glass for the common people.

The various manuscripts on different subjects written with golden frontispiece and floral designs drawn with the ink made of precious stones are a centre of attraction not only for the scholars but also for the general public.
