Bagar is a small town situated in the Shekhawati region at 14 Km from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. It was founded in the middle of 15th century by the Nagar Pathans Bagar.

In Bagar, some of the most prominent families are Marwari including the Piramals, Rungtas, and Maheshwaris who have all contributed significantly to the education and development of the town.

Bagar is also well known for the havelis of Rungtas and Piramal Makharia Havali which has been known as famous heritage hotel in shekhawati.

The fresco on the walls of the Rungtas Haveli in Bagar show thematic transition of the fresco art as a result of the socio historical changes that marked the historical Rajasthani Art. This haveli  opens into a courtyard surrounded by corridors that leads to another larger courtyard which is surrounded by verandahs that lead to rooms.

Other Places of Interest in Bagar
Bagar is the only painted town of Shekhawati region where one can stay in a Marwari style. A large white gate (built in 1928 in honour Maharaja of Jaipur’s visit), Fatehsagar water tank (a large reservoir built by the Ojha family), and Miya Saheb ki Durgah are also worth visiting.

Very close to Dundlod in Shekhawati and around 25 kms in the southeast direction of Mandawa, the town of Mukundgarh is located. This town is built around a temple square, outside the sloping fort walls.

In Mukundgarh you can shop for local handicraft in a charming white-colonnaded market.  Besides textiles, it’s renowned brass and iron scissors are Mukundgarh highlights.

Miniatures Paintings

The Kanoria and Generiwala Havelis deserves a visit.  Also worth a visit is Mukundgarh Fort which now serves as a heritage hotel. Other tourist places of interest are Shiv Temple, Gopinath temple and Venugopal temple.

Kanoria Haveli  is a rich home of paintings. The exquisitely beautiful miniature paintings adorn the walls of the Kanoria Haveli. From beautifully painted frescoes of Hindu mythological characters to the exquisite Rajput art, the Haveli seems to be a treasure trove for art lovers.

The spacious and lavishly designed halls, sprawling courtyards are the major features of this Haveli.

Shekhawati, meaning the garden of Shekha, derives its name from Rao Shekha, its former ruler. Situated in the Delhi-Bikaner-Jaipur triangle, Shekhawati is a semi desert region in north Rajasthan.

Known as the “Open art gallery of Rajasthan”, this region is mainly famous for its amazing havelis richly painted and decorated built by the early Marwaris.

From painted murals to carvings to mirror work, these havelis have their walls and ceilings adorned with numerous forms of fine art.

The fresco of the some havelis even depict mythological themes as well as images of huge animals.

The Piramal Haveli

The Piramal Haveli in Baggar village, is one of the grandest mansions in Shekhawati. Constructed in 1928, by Seth Piramal Chaturbhuj Makharia, as his family home, it was later converted into a heritage hotel.

The Hotel Piramal Haveli has extensive lawns and courtyards with large pillars. The walls of the courtyard are decorated with frescoes of mythological figures in traditional Rajasthani style.

The region of Shekhawati where Piramal Haveli is situated was made into an independent kingdom in the year 1471 and later on annexed with the Jhunjhunu city.
