Professor Man Mohan Sharma – Eminent Chemical Engineer from Rajasthan

Man Mohan Sharma was born in Jodhpur(Rajasthan) on May 1,1937. He did his education at Jodhpur, Mumbai and Cambridge and at the age of 27 he was appointed as a Professor in the University of Mumbai, Department of Chemical Technology.

Professor Sharma has published 235 papers based on original research, in international journals of high standing, and supervised 71 students in completing their Doctoral dissertations during his distinguished career.

His Contribution in Growth of Different Industries

He has been member of Board of Directors of several reputed companies like Indian Petrochemical Ltd, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Hindustan Organic Chemicals, Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd, Gharda Chemicals Ltd and Resins and Plastics etc from the early 1970s. He brought a rare clarity to the planning of to various industries as their adviser/consultant.

Professor Sharma was an exponent of innovations and he stressed for the industry to adopt techniques which eventually led to the successful implementation of many technologies. This resulted in substantial improvement in turn over, and financial advantage in different sectors of industry such as soda ash, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and petroleum refining.

He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet, Govt. of India on different occasions and had been Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas from 1981 to June 2001. Currently he is Chairman of FIST, DST and Swarnajayanthi Fellowships/Scholarships, DST.

Professor’s Contributions to Chemical Engineering

He was editor of one of the most prestigious journals in Chemical Engineering, namely Chemical Engineering Science (Pergamon Press, UK) from 1975 to 1986. In addition, he has been member of Editorial Advisory Boards of several international journals of repute. For outstanding publications, he got the Moulton Medal of the Institution of Chemical Engineering, U.K. in 1971 and 1977.

Awards and Honours

For his contributions and achievements, Prof. M.M. Sharma has been recognised through several honours and awards. Some of them are: S.S. Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences in 1973, FICCI Award in 1981, the Vishwakarma Medal of the INSA in 1985, G.M. Modi Award in 1991, Meghnad Saha Medal in 1994, the prestigious Leverhulme Medal of the Royal Society in 1996, H.K. Firodia Award and Shatabdi Puraskar of the Indian Science Congress Association in 1999.

BHU Varanasi, Roorkee University, SM Kanpur University, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and University of Mumbai have honoured Prof. Sharma with Honorary Doctorates.

Prof. Man Mohan Sharma was elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in 1976 and was President of the Academy in 1989-1990. He was elected as the Fellow of Royal Society (FRS), U.K., in 1990 and was the first engineer from India to become a Fellow. Prof. Sharma was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1987 and Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

Param Veer Major Shaitan Singh from Jodhpur, Rajasthan – Bravery at its Best

The highest wartime gallantry medal winner Major Shaitan Singh was born on  December 1, 1924 at Jodhpur in Rajasthan. He was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Hem Singh Bhati, He was posted in the Kumaon Regiment on 1 August 1949.
For his leadership and courage during the 1962 Indo-China War he was awarded by the most gallantry award Param Veer Chakra.
Background
The Indo-China war in 1962 was triggered by a challenge over Aksai Chin located in the northwestern region of the Tibetan Plateau north of the western Kunlun Mountains.
During the  war, 13 Kumaon were deployed in Chusul sector and the company was led  by Major Shaitan singh. Major Shaitan singh held a curcial position at Rezang La. There were total 3 platoons with a total of 118  men which were in the defence of total 5180 meters of area.
The locality was isolated from the main defended sector and consisted of five platoon-defended position. On 18 November 1962, the Chinese forces subjected the company position to heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire and attacked it in overwhelming strength in several successive waves.
Against heavy odds, our troops beat back successive waves of enemy attack. During the action, Major Shaitan singh dominated the scene of operations and moved at great personal risk from one platoon post to another sustaining the morale of his hard-pressed platoon posts.
While doing so he was seriously wounded but continued to encourage and lead his men, who, following his brave example fought gallantly and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. For every man lost to us, the enemy lost four or five. When major Shaitan Singh fell disabled by wounds in his arms and abdomen, his men tried to evacuate him but they came under heavy machine-gun fire. Major Shaitan Singh then ordered his men to leave him to his fate in order to save their lives.
Major Shaitan Singh’s supreme courage, leadership and exemplary devotion to duty inspired his company to fight almost to the last man.

Umed Garden in Jodhpur – Home to Sprawling Lawns, Zoo and Government Museum

One of the popular gardens of Jodhpur is Umed garden which are dotted with varied species of roses, trees and sprawling lawns. It is spread on an area of 82 acres. The famous Umed garden of Jodhpur, was developed by Maharaja Umed Singh.

The garden has five separate gates around it to facilitate entry to the garden from different directions.

There are towering Ashoka trees, sprawling lawns, artistically designed fountains, a library and a zoo which inaugurated by Viceroy Willingdon, situated in side the Garden.

At the time of its inauguration, it had lion, tiger, zebra, ostrich and an emu but currently it houses different types of birds, local, African and Australian parrots, ducks, rabbits etc.

Also there are pigeons, crocodiles, foxes, deer, lions, leopards, etc. Children as well as adults very often visit the garden with equal interest.

Government Museum

In the garden complex lies the Government Museum, which houses rich collection of weapons, textiles, miniature portraits, local crafts and images of Jain Tirthankars.

On your tour to Jodhpur you should visit the various parks in Jodhpur, India. There are quite a few beautiful Jodhpur gardens for the purpose of sightseeing. One of the famous gardens of Jodhpur is Mandore Garden.

Mandore is located about 5 miles north of Jodhpur. It was the former capital of Maharajas of Marwar. Later it was abandoned for security concerns regarding the Mehrangarh fort. Its extensive Mandore garden, with high rock terrace, makes it a popular attraction of Jodhpur.

Attraction of Mandore Garden -  A Cluster of Cenotaphs

In the Mandore garden, there are the dewals or cenotaphs of Jodhpur’s former rulers. Instead of the usual chhatri-shaped cenotaphs typical of Rajasthan, the cenotaphs of the famous Mandore garden of Jodhpur, Rajasthan are built along the lines of a Hindu temple.

They are four stories high, with fine columns and an elegant spire, all in red sandstone. The most impressive dewal is the dewal of Maharaja Ajit Singh. These cenotaphs are set in beautiful landscaped gardens. The cenotaphs of the Maharani are set on a rocky outcrop over the hill.

Hall of Heroes-  Dedicated to  Rajput Folk Heroes

Near to the cenotaphs is the hall of heroes. The hall is dedicated to various deities and Rajput folk heroes.  The statues of the deities and heroes we are carved out of rock and painted in bright colors. Also in this garden of Jodhpur, is “The Shrine of the Three Hundred Million Gods”, filled with brightly colored images of the various Hindu Gods. As you climb up the hill, you come to the ruined city of Mandore, with its old palace.
