Umed Garden in Jodhpur – Home to Sprawling Lawns, Zoo and Government Museum

Jodhpur is known for its splendor, traditions and culture. The various forts, palaces, moments and many picturesque gardens talk a lot about the rich past of Jodhpur city.

Among the gardens of Jodhpur, the most beautiful are the Mandore Garden, the Umed Garden and the Nehru Park.

One of the popular gardens of Jodhpur is Umed garden which are dotted with varied species of roses, trees and sprawling lawns. It is spread on an area of 82 acres. The famous Umed garden of Jodhpur, was developed by Maharaja Umed Singh.

The garden has five separate gates around it to facilitate entry to the garden from different directions.

Sprawling Lawns and Zoo

There are towering Ashoka trees, sprawling lawns, artistically designed fountains, a library and a zoo which inaugurated by Viceroy Willingdon, situated in side the Garden.

At the time of its inauguration, it had lion, tiger, zebra, ostrich and an emu but currently it houses different types of birds, local, African and Australian parrots, ducks, rabbits etc.

Also there are pigeons, crocodiles, foxes, deer, lions, leopards, etc. Children as well as adults very often visit the garden with equal interest.

Government Museum

In the garden complex lies the Government Museum, which houses rich collection of weapons, textiles, miniature portraits, local crafts and images of Jain Tirthankars.

On your tour to Jodhpur you should visit the various parks in Jodhpur, India. There are quite a few beautiful Jodhpur gardens for the purpose of sightseeing. One of the famous gardens of Jodhpur is Mandore Garden.

Mandore is located about 5 miles north of Jodhpur. It was the former capital of Maharajas of Marwar. Later it was abandoned for security concerns regarding the Mehrangarh fort. Its extensive Mandore garden, with high rock terrace, makes it a popular attraction of Jodhpur.

Attraction of Mandore Garden -  A Cluster of Cenotaphs

In the Mandore garden, there are the dewals or cenotaphs of Jodhpur’s former rulers. Instead of the usual chhatri-shaped cenotaphs typical of Rajasthan, the cenotaphs of the famous Mandore garden of Jodhpur, Rajasthan are built along the lines of a Hindu temple.

They are four stories high, with fine columns and an elegant spire, all in red sandstone. The most impressive dewal is the dewal of Maharaja Ajit Singh. These cenotaphs are set in beautiful landscaped gardens. The cenotaphs of the Maharani are set on a rocky outcrop over the hill.

Hall of Heroes-  Dedicated to  Rajput Folk Heroes

Near to the cenotaphs is the hall of heroes. The hall is dedicated to various deities and Rajput folk heroes.  The statues of the deities and heroes we are carved out of rock and painted in bright colors. Also in this garden of Jodhpur, is “The Shrine of the Three Hundred Million Gods”, filled with brightly colored images of the various Hindu Gods. As you climb up the hill, you come to the ruined city of Mandore, with its old palace.
