Rare Artifacts and Frescoes

The Tibrewal haveli boasts of some beautiful and rare artifacts and frescoes. The wall paintings are descriptive and portrays the change taste and techniques of artist to the best of their ability.

Prominent Wall Paintings

One of the most prominent painting in this haveli shows a goods train laden with livestock crossing a passenger train. The painting in itself is synonym of the changing traditions and modes of commutation for traders.  On the other wall of Kaniram Narsingdas Tibrewal Haveli,  a man tying a turban while another man holds mirror for him.

Another painting which catches tourist attention is of a man and woman who seem to be passing a child in between. Some of these frescoes have been done in gold with the help of gold leafs.

Like all havelis in shekhawati region, the Kaniram Narsinghdas Tibrewal Haveli opens into a courtyard surrounded by corridors that leads to another larger courtyard which is surrounded by verandahs that lead to rooms.

Some of the famous havalis of Jhujhunu includes  Kaniram Narsinghdas Tibrewal Haveli, Mohanlal Ishwardas Haveli and  Narudin Farooqi Haveli and Modi Haveli.

These havelis were constructed with the special motive of accommodating their huge and widespread families as well as signifying their wealth and prosperity.

Mohanlal Ishwardas Haveli also happens to be one of those popular havelis. It was built by Mohanlal Ishwardas in late 19th century.

He was a wealthy and eminent merchant of Jhunjhunu.  As one tours inside the haveli, he gets quite a fair idea of the effort and expenditure that has gone in the designing and embellishment of this building.

Wall Paintings

Mohanlal Ishwardas Modi Haveli has wall paintings famous for portraying the life and past time of Lord Krishna.  Some of these fresco show Lord Krishna stealing butter and hiding away the clothes of Gopis while they are bathing in the river.

Just adjacent, on a smaller arch, a British imperial figure can be seen. This includes monarch and judges in royal robes. On the opposite side of this arch, the paintings of Indian rulers and Nawab can be seen.

These paintings are extremely descriptive and exhibit praiseworthy craftsmanship of Shekhawati region during late 18th century.

Painted Havelis in Jhunjhunu

Jhunjhunu has countless painted havelis. These mansions were built by prosperous merchants in the nineteenth century.

The colorful paintings on walls and ceilings depict the culture, fauna and flora of the land of Rajasthan.

Some of the famous havalis of Jhujhunu include : Kaniram Narsinghdas Tibrewal Haveli, Mohanlal Ishwardas Haveli, Narudin Farooqi Haveli and Modi Haveli.

Narudin Farooqi Haveli has a floral motif in Muslim style which uses prominent blue color. The haveli opens up with a huge, carved wooden gate that leads to a courtyard. This courtyard leads to rooms that are again lined by long running corridors. White and blue rule the show at the frescos that cover the walls at haveli.

Rani Sati Temple

Jhunjhunu is also famous for the Rani Sati Temple. Although the practice of Sati is banned in India, however, places of Sati are very popular with locals and Rajasthanis of other states. These people value traditional fidelity.

More than 100,000 devotees visit this temple every year for a fair.

Other tourist places  in Jhujhunu include Badalgarh Fort; Jorawargarh Fort built by Thakur Jorawar Singh, the son of Thakur Shardul Singh Shekhawat; Akhegarh Fort and Khetri Mahal.

Nand Lal Devra Haveli in Fatehpur  is richly adorned with beautiful paintings which are mainly in shades of blue and red. Exquisite murals and paintings that were worn out with age are now being restored by a French woman artist  named Nadine Le Prince, who wishes to preserve these medieval Rajput art.

From the walls outside the Haveli to the walls of the bedrooms, Nadine employed a number of people to restore and preserve these antique objects.

Nand Lal Devra Haveli has an interesting painted ceiling as you enter the house and nice paintings on the courtyard walls. There is a 17th century baori (step-well) near inside the haveli.

Religious Places in Fatehpur

The town has blessings of many religious mentors, including Dargah of Hazrat Nazmudin and Temple of Do-Janti Balaji Dham, which is famous for its exterior hand made stone bricks construction and for Lord Sun painting.

The Thakurs of Nawalgarh also had a great passion for buildings. Many structures of the early 20th century still stand. Among them is Roop Niwas, Anandilal Poddar Haveli,  Chokhani Haveli,  and Aath Haveli Complex.

Walking Through Nawalgarh’s street, there is much to discover. You can find Shiva Temple with a multi headed lingam; tiled cenotaph and a painting school.

This haveli in Nawalgarh is now a museum displaying the wedding costumes of different communities of Rajasthan.  Built in the year 1902, the Anandilal Poddar Haveli, Nawalgarh has an array of beautiful frescoes, murals and exclusive artwork which attracts tourists from all over.

The frescoes depict different images of royal knights and kings men, of Krishna surrounded by the Gopis and cow herds. You can also find here the painting of a motor cars, pillars, archways and gleaming brass doors.

The Muslim Kayamkhani Nawab, Fateh Khan established Fatehpur in 1451. He constructed the fort of Fatehpur in 1449 and ruled up to 1474. It served as the capital of him.

The Jagannath Singhania Haveli has some fine paintings of Radha and Krishna and shows some British men holding guns. This haveli has special door rooms situated on the terrace which is open from all sides There is air-circulation from all sides and thus it remains cool naturally.

Exclusive “Baithak” in Haveli

The “Baithak” of  this haveli is  exclusive because it has 5 doors.  Other Baithak’s in the region have 3 doors only. There is room in Haveli “Baradari”  in Persian and Moghul architecture,  with 12 doors designed to allow the free draught of air through it. Persons of repute used it as a venue for formal and informal settings in hot weather.  It is also known as the ‘mehfil’ room.

Havelis Room – “Rangeen Kamra

Other Room include Rangeen Kamra, which is also known as the colourful room. The speciality of this particular room is that it acts both as a secret chamber and is also renowned for its artistic beauty. The floors, walls as well as the ceilings are hand painted depicting stories based on the life of Lord Krishna.

The haveli has Naal on one side and Nohra on the other side which can be used as open space for parking, swimming pool and is large enough to construct the two together.

One of the best-maintained havelis in all of  Shekhawati, the Chokhani Haveli in Mandawa, is a huge mansion divided into two parts. One part is occupied; the other lies vacant but is open to visitors.

Covered with Intricate and Beautiful Frescoes

The inside walls, arches, balconies, and jharokhas (windows) of the haveli are covered with intricate and beautiful frescoes. The predominant colors that rule the show are golden, yellow, blue, maroon, green, etc.

Like all havelis, the Chokhani Haveli  opens into a courtyard surrounded by verandahs that lead a bigger courtyard. This courtyard served as the inner quarters, the area where the women stayed and moved about freely.

The bigger second courtyard at Chokhani Haveli in Mandawa was the center of much of the household activities.
