Elephant Festival - An Event in the Honor of Rajputs of Rajasthan

The Rajputs, who held control over Rajasthan for a long period of time, have become synonyms for courage, sacrifice and grandeur.

The Elephant Festival is an attempt on the part of Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation(RTDC) to introduce the people of India and abroad to the royalty of the Rajputs.

This magnificent spectacle gets underway in the Hindu month of Phalgun (march) on Holi, the festival of colors.

Attractions of Elephant Festival

The festival begins with a procession of elephants, camels, horses and folk dancers which is of immense delight to the tourists.

The sight of mighty jumbos striding majestically is a treat to watch. The mahavats or owners proudly decorate their elephants with bright colors, jhools (saddle cloth) and heavy jewellery. Female elephants are made to wear payals or anklets which tinkle as they walk.

The most beautifully decorated elephants are awarded.
