Chandresh Kumari – Congress candidate for Jodhpur Lok Sabha Seat

Congress Candidate for Jodhpur Lok Sabha seat - Chandresh Kumari

Congress Candidate for Jodhpur Lok Sabha seat - Chandresh Kumari

Congressian Chandresh Kumari will contest from Jodhpur Parliamentary Constituency. She has returned to her native place to face the heat and dust of electioneering leaving behind the cool environs of the land of apples, Himachal Pradesh.

Chandresh Kumari -  Sister of Gajsingh – A  former ruler of Jodhpur

Sister of former ruler of Jodhpur, Gajsingh and former national president of Mahila Congress, Chandresh Kumari locks horns with BJP’s sitting MP Jaswant Singh Bishnoi.

Political Career

Being a senior party person, three time MLA from Himachal Pradesh, three term minister and having experience of serving one term each in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Chandresh Kumari seemed the right face to the party to avert BJP’s bid for a hat-trick.

Why She is Nominated From Jodhpur ?

With the inclusion of a sizeable Rajput population in Jodhpur Lok Sabha constituency after delimitation, the Congress decided to field Chandresh Kumari to mobilise Rajput votes in its favour. Ms Kumari is banking on Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who is personally campaigning in the constituency to ensure her victory.

Having left Jodhpur nearly 40 years ago after getting married to Aditya Deb Katoch of Himachal Pradesh at the age of 24, Chandresh Kumari is now trying her best to woo voters in their local dialect.

The BJP candidate, on the other hand, is non-controversial and has no opponents inside the party.  He can count completely on the votes of the Bishnoi community, which numbers about 1.5 lakh, along with a good part of the Rajput vote, even if it gets split to an extent because of Chandresh Kumari.

Lalchand Kataria  lost in the last Assembly Election

Lalchand Kataria, a Jat leader, lost in the last assembly election from Jhotwara last year.  Mr Kataria from Jaipur Rural,  is being seen to please the Jat lobby that was maximum voters in Jaipur region.

Lalchand Kataria, a 42 years old has done Higher Secondary and have been worked as a MLA from Amer Jaipur.

About Jaipur Rural Constituency

This is a new constituency that has been carved out after delimitation, so there is no precedent in the Lok Sabha.  Meenas will be a major vote bank in this region.

The Assembly polls tell a strange story. One would have assumed that the BJP would have done badly in the region dominated by the Meenas. Nevertheless, of the eight assembly segments, the BJP won five, the Congress two, and an independent won one.

About Jaipur Parliamentary Constituency

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan is an urban constituency where caste equations don’t count for all that much. It is more about ideas, visions and most of all, ability to capture the imagination of the middle class voters that determines the final result.

The BJP has been winning the Lok Sabha seat since 1991. In the previous assembly elections, the BJP won five of the eight segments, while the Congress won three. The BJP vote was about 55,000 more than the Congress vote.

Giridhari Lal Bhargava had made it his home turf. This year the scene will be different due to sad demise of Mr Bhargava just a monthback.

The BJP has fielded Ghanshyam Tiwari while the Congress has fielded Mahesh Joshi. Both are Brahmins, but it is not very likely that caste considerations will count for much in an urban setting.
